The Importance of Set Pieces

What’s the one scene I really remember from Divergent by Veronica Roth? (Okay, there was a few) but the main one was when they climbed the ferris wheel. And I realised: you need interesting set pieces, just like a film. They’re the bits you remember – not the normal everyday stuff. Like Harry Potter, you don’t really remember the bits at Hogwarts when they’re simply talking, it’s the maze and the shrieking shack and stuff that stands out.
That’s one of the bits I liked about The Secret Circle (the TV show) – they went to these awesome set pieces. Like the abandoned funfair – which was creepy!
Have you got any interesting, different set pieces in what you’re writing?
