The Gathering Dark by Leigh Bardugo

The Gathering Dark (UK)
Shadow and Bone (US)
by Leigh Bardugo

This was like a perfect little fantasy – magic, strange lands, odd names – it had everything. Basically its about Alina who is taken to an awesome fancy palace where she is taught to use her newfound powers which can be used to save the world – kind of. As for boys, there’s the Darkling, and Mal, but it’s not a love triangle.
This book had a twist I really did not see coming. It made me suddenly think and realise I’d been just as duped as she had been, which is really something to pull off. I loved the setting – snowy palace, forests – and the characters, the adventure, the fact there were soldiers, her clothes, the magic.
I’m really looking forward to the sequel (which is called Siege and Storm in the US) and can’t wait to read more fantasy adventure with these characters!
