YA Novella Reviews [1]

Lots of YA books are adding #0.5 or #1.5 to their series’, including prequels, different POVS, new stories.
I’ve rounded up some of them here.

Seraphina: The Audition
Seraphina #0.5
Rachel Hartman

The story of Seraphina’s audition process with Master Viridius, to become the assistant music composer and Princess Glisselda’s music tutor.

The idea of the dragons as emotionless, mathmatical people is awesome, and this fun prequel certainly makes me want to read the book.

As They Slip Away
Across The Universe #0.5
Beth Revis

Taking place on the spaceship Godspeed before Amy Martin wakes up and Elder takes leadership, this novella describes life at the Hospital during Eldest’s reign. Focusing primarily on background characters, readers will see fan-favorite characters Harley, Orion, Victria, and more.

I really like the Across The Universe series, but I didn’t like this. It was a sad tragedy, and to be honest, I don’t see what it lends to the main story of the books.

Mila 2.0 Origins: The Fire
Mila 2.0 #0.5
Debra Driza

Mila can’t remember anything before the fire that took her father’s life. It’s normal to have some memory loss after traumatic events, but Mila doesn’t remember if she’s ever learned to ride a bike, or if she’s ever been in love. Nothing.
What she doesn’t know is that she isn’t supposed to remember—that she was built in a computer science lab and programmed to forget. Because if she remembers, she might discover her true identity.
The question is: If she relived the fire, what would she see?

After reading Mila 2.0 I don’t understand why this story is important. The synopsis from Goodreads above doesn’t really explain what this is about – it’s about Mila waking up in her house, only to find its on fire and she has to save her parents.
