Celaena Sardothien is an assassin, but she got caught and sent to a kind of prison camp. Along comes a Prince to free her – or rather have her fight in a contest to become the King’s Champion.
I have heard some really mixed reviews about this. As for me? I enjoyed it, even if there were parts that felt unnecessary. The main story of the other Champions being mysteriously killed off one by one was interesting, and I really liked Celaena. The contest and the contestants were fun to read about, and I liked the secret passages – they’re always cool.
The book is about half and half in terms of story and romance, although whenever the perspective changed to one of the guys, all they thought of was Celaena. I would have liked to have seen her actually proving herself as the awesome assassin she apparently is. Instead she liked to dress up in pretty dresses and eat candy. Which is fine, but it tipped the balance into girly instead of action. From a writing point of view, some of the conversations just didn’t seem to match with what they’d been thinking earlier, or what the other person had said. But I can see the author has created a huge world which hopefully Celaena will explore in later books.
I really enjoyed reading and I’m looking forward to the sequel Crown of Midnight which comes out August this year.
